The Grade II* listed chimneys at Battersea Power Station are an iconic part of the London skyline but need to be rebuilt as the existing ones are badly corroded. There had been widespread public concern that if the chimneys were demolished they would not be rebuilt. The reconstruction work on the whole site is highly visible from one of London’s busiest commuter rail routes and so the developers opted as part of their communications strategy to create London’s biggest bill-board on the West elevation of the Power Station.
We designed a fixing method to the listed brickwork that was accepted by Wandsworth Borough Council and English Heritage with the intention of deploying large cherry pickers for access. However, scheduling of the major ground works precluded any access from ground level at the base of the wall s and so the entire installation was switched to rope access teams. The site was operating under CDM (Construction Design & Management Regulation), but split into two areas. Our work took place from one area but any dropped items would land in the other. In turn that required meeting the exacting Health & Safety requirements of both Principal Contractors Fixing.
The banner is made of 6 large panels each rigged to a net of tensioned steel wires, with cover strips over the tensioning mechanisms. It was installed exactly to schedule and in budget.
