Redefining BST Hyde ParkStar Events introduces New-look Great Oak Stage for Roger Waters’ incredible production
AEG Presents’ coup in booking Roger Waters Us + Them opus for British Summer Time Hyde Park meant overhauling the festival’s celebrated core elements, twice.
Firstly to accommodate Waters’ weight of theatre, video and graphics, lights, lasers, pyros, bespoke architecture and surround sound, replete with extended stage wings and flattened out performance box.
And secondly to reshape the stage along more traditional lines for second headliner, The Cure, overnight as well as stripping bespoke Waters’ elements out from front of house.
Star Events redesigned the entire Great Oak Stage sub-structure and super-structure for Waters, making it greater still, so the VerTech roof could incorporate Us + Them’s massive 60 tons of ‘infrastructure’ and 110 tons of production.
The changeover for The Cure’s 40th anniversary show, night two of BST 2018, took three cranes and six trucks for the kit coming out, including 10 Star structures from front of house used for Waters’ surround sound and projectors.
Star Events’ T Towers, with a narrow gauge/small base to ensure minimum impact on sightlines, hung extra Martin Audio MLA supplements around the arena’s perimeter.
On stage, the Star team rebuilt the main floor deck and provided rigging support for the big screen move and lighting install required in reinstating the performance box.
The results / ROI
The 2018 Great Oak Stage amplified AEG Presents’ ‘The answer is yes, what’s the question?’ approach to accommodating artists/production managers.
It highlighted the unique flexibility of Star Events’ VerTech model and the ingenuity of its team, from management and engineers to crew.
Roger Waters’ Us + Them performance was the first of BST Hyde Park’s six sell out shows to shift its 65,000 tickets.
“To achieve what Roger Waters needed while still enabling the other five major BST Hyde Park shows was challenging to say the least. It showed the flexibility of the VerTech system though. We only had to make a small handful of special components. And the show was absolutely stunning.”
