Star support latest UK musical phenomenon with heavy duty Ground Support
Star Events supplied a 16.8m x 6.2m VerTech mega-truss and steel ground support at the Westpoint Arena, Exeter to increase loading capacity in the roof for Manchester band The 1975’s big production show.
Approached by Tour Rigger Simon Lawrence, of The Rigging Co, who worked with Star to overcome similar issues for Disclosure at Alexandra Palace in 2017, the 1975 solution had to address the weight loading and maximise clearance at the same time.
With no room for cranes to position the vertical masts Star Events installed service hoists above each mast location. The main mega-truss grid was assembled at ground level and wheeled into place while the hoists lifted the masts and lowered them, in sections, through the grid.
Ten aluminium spreader trusses, secured to the top of the grid, provided suspension locations for the touring rig; heavy duty Loadguard hoists were then used to lift the grid to the 10m trim height leaving just 442mm clearance to the roof steel. The touring stage was built between the vertical masts.
